Inspired by John Constable's sky studies, Ralph initially intended to document a sky a day for a year. After that year, he decided to keep going.

Ralph draws the sky in his diary using colored pencils. Ralph uses that drawing to create the sky diary paintings which are acrylic on canvas.

Ralph usually draws the sky from his studio in the San Francisco Bay Area, but he takes his diary and pencils whenever he travels.

A sky diary was stolen containing twenty-three skies outside Eli's Mile High Club in Oakland. The lone sky that Ralph missed was when he got his jaw broken and was in surgery all day.
